Colorado Hunter Mistakenly Kills Wolf, Raises Concerns Over Coyote Hunting Regulations
In January, a hunter in northwestern Colorado mistakenly shot and killed a wolf, believing it to be a coyote. The incident was reported to Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), which conducted a federal investigation. The hunter was cited for killing the wolf without the appropriate license, resulting in a $140 fee and five hunting license suspension points. Despite the potential for severe penalties, including jail time and hefty fines, CPW decided not to press further charges due to the hunter's immediate reporting and acceptance of responsibility. This incident has sparked concerns among wolf advocates about the potential for similar mistakes, especially with the recent regulation changes that allow hunters to kill two coyotes per day.
