America First Legal Sues California Over 'Stop Nick Shirley Act,' Citing First Amendment Violations
America First Legal (AFL), in collaboration with John W. Howard of JW Howard Attorneys, has filed a federal lawsuit against California Attorney General Rob Bonta and California Secretary of State Shirley Weber. The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of California, challenges California Assembly Bill 2624, also known as the 'Stop Nick Shirley Act.' This law, recently signed by Governor Gavin Newsom, is alleged to unconstitutionally target investigative journalists and citizens who report on immigration-related organizations. The complaint asserts that the act violates the First Amendment, the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, and Article I, Section 10 of the U.S. Constitution.
