Salvadoran TPS Holders Face September 9 Deadline, Sparking Widespread Uncertainty and Calls for Extension
Over 170,000 Salvadoran Temporary Protected Status (TPS) holders nationwide, including approximately 6,000 in Nevada, are facing a September 9 deadline for the expiration of their protections. This impending deadline has created significant anxiety among those who have lived and worked in the U.S. for decades, with many concerned about losing their jobs and facing deportation. Las Vegas immigration attorney Raissa Rivas reports an increase in calls from clients desperately seeking guidance. U.S. Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) has urged the administration to extend TPS for Salvadorans, highlighting their substantial economic contributions—an estimated $5.4 billion annually and $1.5 billion in taxes—and the potential destabilization of industries like hospitality and construction if these workers are forced to leave. Many TPS holders have deep roots in the U.S., with U.S. citizen children and established lives.
