Historical Sonic Boom Over Kelowna Remembered for Its Impact
On August 6, 1969, a sonic boom caused by U.S. Navy pilot Capt. Vince Donile of the Blue Angels shattered windows across downtown Kelowna. The incident occurred during a practice session for the Kelowna Regatta, where the Blue Angels were performing a crossing maneuver. Capt. Donile inadvertently broke the sound barrier, resulting in significant property damage but only minor injuries. Despite initial backlash, the event drew significant attention to Kelowna, boosting local tourism and business as people flocked to see the air show. The U.S. government covered the $250,000 cleanup cost, and the incident remains a notable part of Kelowna's history.
