Japan and Southeast Asia Strengthen Cultural and Economic Ties Amid Growing Trust
Japan and Southeast Asia are experiencing a deepening of cultural and economic ties, marked by increased people-to-people exchanges and mutual interest in each other's cultures. Events such as the Thai Festival Tokyo 2026 and the Laos Festival 2026 have drawn significant crowds, highlighting the growing popularity of Southeast Asian culture in Japan. The number of visitors from Southeast Asia to Japan has increased tenfold since 2003, with Japan ranking as the top holiday destination for ASEAN countries. Trust in Japan remains high, with 65.6% of ASEAN respondents expressing trust in Japan, citing its respect for international law and economic resources. Historical reconciliation efforts, such as the Fukuda Doctrine, continue to guide these relations.
