SIPRI Report Highlights Increased Reliance on Nuclear Weapons Amid Rising Escalation Risks
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has released its 2026 Yearbook, which provides an annual assessment of global armaments, disarmament, and international security. The report highlights a concerning trend where states are increasingly relying on nuclear weapons as instruments of national power, reversing decades of efforts to reduce their numbers and roles. The Yearbook notes that the world's nine nuclear-armed states, including the United States and Russia, are modernizing and enhancing their nuclear arsenals. As of January 2026, there are an estimated 12,187 nuclear warheads globally, with about 9,745 in military stockpiles. The report warns of heightened risks of miscalculation and escalation due to advances in weapon technology and geopolitical tensions.
