Wildfires scorch 7.5 million acres across western U.S.
The western United States is experiencing an unprecedented wildfire season, with over 50,000 fires burning a total of 7.5 million acres as of August 27, 2026. This figure is nearly double the 3.8 million acres burned by the same date last year. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, 37 large fires remain uncontained across Oregon, Washington, and Idaho, with more than 28,000 personnel deployed nationwide. A massive grass fire along the Oregon-Idaho border has consumed over 578,000 acres, severely impacting grazing lands. The crisis is linked to last winter's unusual weather patterns, which included record-low snow cover and warmer-than-average temperatures. These conditions have exacerbated fire risks and created long-term challenges for ranchers and local ecosystems.
