Tourists Overwhelm European Hotspots Amid Rising Visitor Numbers
European tourist destinations are experiencing overwhelming numbers of visitors, with popular sites like the Acropolis, Trevi Fountain, and Vatican swarmed by tourists as early as 8am. The European Travel Commission reports a 5% increase in international tourist arrivals in 2026 compared to the previous year. This surge has led to overcrowding and anti-tourism protests in places like Mallorca. Efforts to manage the influx, such as introducing a fee for visiting the Trevi Fountain during peak hours, have had limited success. The rise in tourism is partly attributed to geopolitical factors redirecting travelers from the Middle East to Europe.
