U.K. Man Pleads Guilty to Hacking Scheme Stealing $8 Million in Virtual Currency from U.S. Victims
Tyler Robert Buchanan, a 24-year-old from Dundee, Scotland, has pleaded guilty in a U.S. federal court to orchestrating a hacking scheme that resulted in the theft of $8 million in virtual currency from victims across the United States. The U.S. Department of Justice reported that Buchanan, along with several co-conspirators, conducted the scheme from September 2021 to April 2023. They used phishing messages to trick victims into providing personal information, which was then used to access virtual wallets and steal currency. Buchanan targeted at least 45 companies in the U.S. and other countries, including Canada, India, and the U.K. He faces a maximum sentence of 22 years in federal prison, with sentencing scheduled for August 21. His co-conspirators, based in the U.S., still face criminal charges.
