Consumer Reports Highlights Sunscreen Effectiveness and Usage Tips
Consumer Reports has released its annual sunscreen ratings, testing over 100 products to evaluate their effectiveness against ultraviolet (UV) rays. The tests focused on SPF (sun protection factor), which measures protection against UVB rays responsible for sunburn and skin cancer, and UVA protection, which is linked to aging and skin cancer. The evaluation process included applying sunscreen to skin samples and exposing them to controlled UV light, as well as testing water-resistant claims by soaking samples for up to 80 minutes. While some products did not meet their labeled SPF claims, experts emphasized that any sunscreen is better than none. Top-rated products included Coppertone Water Babies Lotion SPF 50 and Eucerin Advanced Hydration Spray SPF 50. The report also highlighted the pros and cons of lotions versus sprays, with lotions offering better coverage and sprays being more convenient but riskier due to potential inhalation and uneven application.
