Agronomist Reports Increased Crop Disease and Varied Yields Across Corn Belt
Scott Dickey, a regional agronomy manager with Beck’s Hybrids, reports that a hot start to September is expected to accelerate crop maturity across parts of the Corn Belt. While some later-planted corn fields might experience reduced test weights and smaller grain, the impact is anticipated to be minimal for fields nearing completion of grain fill. Soybeans, particularly later-planted varieties, are expected to be more significantly affected by triple-digit temperatures. However, earlier-planted soybeans that are approaching the R6 stage are likely to see a more minimal impact due to their advanced development. Corn harvest is currently underway in western Missouri and is wrapping up in southeast Kansas. Yields in northeast Kansas are described as fairly good, but western Kansas has experienced very dry conditions, leading to the death of much of the dryland corn and no harvest in those areas.
