Chronic Myelomonocytic Leukemia: Understanding Extramedullary Disease
Chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML) is a complex blood cancer characterized by monocytosis and marrow dysplasia. A significant aspect of CMML is the occurrence of extramedullary disease (EMD), where cancerous cells infiltrate areas outside the bone marrow. This condition is often underrecognized but can significantly impact patient outcomes, leading to increased morbidity and a higher risk of acute myeloid leukemia transformation. EMD is associated with specific genetic mutations and inflammatory processes, necessitating a comprehensive diagnostic approach that includes imaging and biopsy.
