Senate Introduces Bill to Adjust Veteran Disability Payments for Inflation
On May 11, 2026, Kansas Senator Jerry Moran introduced the Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment Act of 2026, aimed at increasing disability payments for veterans to keep pace with inflation. This legislative move is part of an annual process to ensure that veterans' benefits, including disability compensation, clothing allowances, and dependency/indemnity compensation for survivors, are adjusted in line with the cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) applied to Social Security benefits. The bill has garnered bipartisan support, with 15 cosponsors from both major political parties and two Independents. If enacted, the new rates would take effect on December 1, 2026, and veterans would see these adjustments reflected in their January 2027 payments. The COLA for 2026 has been set at 2.8%, mirroring the increase for Social Security recipients, and is calculated using the Consumer Price Index by the Department of Labor.
