Cal/OSHA Issues Statewide Warning to Employers on High Heat Worker Protections
Cal/OSHA has issued an advisory reminding employers across California to implement and maintain protections for workers amid expected high temperatures. Extreme heat warnings are in effect for parts of Southern California, including Los Angeles and San Diego regions, with temperatures projected to reach up to 107 degrees Fahrenheit. A heat advisory also covers Northern California, with temperatures up to 103 degrees in certain areas. Under Cal/OSHA’s Heat Illness Prevention Standards, employers are legally required to protect both indoor and outdoor workers from heat-related illness. This includes providing cool-down areas, rest breaks, and access to drinking water. For indoor workplaces, protections are mandated when temperatures reach 82 degrees. Outdoor worksites require shade when temperatures exceed 80 degrees, and additional protections are necessary in specific industries when temperatures hit or exceed 95 degrees.
