OASIS Scholarship Program Supports Careers in Gerontology Amid Growing Senior Population
The Friends of OASIS, a nonprofit organization supporting the OASIS Senior Center in Corona del Mar, has been actively investing in the education of students pursuing careers in gerontology and related fields. Since 2021, the organization has awarded over $130,000 in scholarships to 86 students in Orange County. These scholarships support degrees in gerontology, mental health, social services, and other fields related to aging. The program aims to address the growing need for professionals in gerontology as the U.S. population ages. By 2040, it is projected that 20% of the U.S. population will be over 65, creating a significant demand for healthcare and social services. The scholarship program, led by Walt Howald and Mike Zimmerman, provides financial assistance to students like Katrina Watson, who is completing her master's degree in gerontology.
