Continuous Glucose Monitors Offer Early Detection for Metabolic Disease Beyond Diabetes Management
Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs), traditionally used for diabetes management, are increasingly being recognized for their utility in detecting metabolic disease years before conventional markers like A1C levels indicate an issue. Research suggests that only about 12% of American adults are metabolically healthy, with many exhibiting signs of metabolic dysfunction long before a formal diagnosis. The process of metabolic disease unfolds through several cumulative layers, starting with repeated fuel surges and compensatory hyperinsulinemia. CGMs can reveal the shape and duration of post-meal glucose excursions, providing insights that fasting glucose values cannot. This early detection is crucial because insulin resistance can build for over a decade before A1C levels rise, and early intervention can significantly impact the reversibility of damage. The PREDICT 1 study, published in Nature Medicine, highlighted significant individual variations in post-meal glucose responses, even to identical meals, unders...
