Raw Farm Owner Challenges FDA Over E. coli Outbreak Investigation
Mark McAfee, owner of Fresno-based Raw Farm, is contesting the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) request to voluntarily withdraw his unpasteurized cheese products from the market. This request comes amid an investigation into an E. coli outbreak that has affected nine individuals across three states, with seven cases in California. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has advised against purchasing or consuming Raw Farm's raw cheddar cheese, which several infected individuals reportedly consumed. Despite these warnings, McAfee maintains that no pathogenic bacteria have been found in his products, and he has shared test results with both the FDA and state regulators. The FDA has not issued a formal recall but has sent a warning letter to consumers. The outbreak has led to serious health complications for some, including hemolytic uremic syndrome, a severe kidney condition.
