Iowa Transitions State IT to Managed Service Model with AWS and Cognizant
Iowa is undertaking a significant overhaul of its technology infrastructure by transitioning its executive branch data to a cloud environment managed by Amazon Web Services (AWS) and shifting daily IT operations to Cognizant Government Solutions. This move is part of a broader transformation initiated by the state's IT consolidation efforts that began in October 2023. The initiative is expected to save taxpayers over $525 million in the next decade by modernizing key IT systems. AWS will handle the migration of data from numerous state data centers and physical servers to its cloud platform, while Cognizant will manage the state's daily technology operations, including server and network management, on-site technical assistance, and first-line IT support. Governor Kim Reynolds highlighted that this transition is a continuation of efforts to improve government efficiency and effectiveness, initiated by a comprehensive review of state government in 2022.
