Montgomery County Acquires White's Ferry, Seeks Virginia's Cooperation to Resume Service
Montgomery County has acquired White's Ferry, a historic ferry service across the Potomac River, and is urging Virginia to assist in resuming operations. The ferry, which ceased operations in December 2020 due to a legal dispute over docking rights, was purchased by Montgomery County for $1.5 million. The acquisition includes riverfront land and facilities on the Maryland side. County officials are now working to repair the vessel and negotiate with Virginia landowners to restore service. The ferry previously transported hundreds of vehicles daily, providing a vital connection between Maryland and Virginia.
