Severe Weather System Threatens Central U.S., 25 Million at Risk
A significant severe weather system is currently impacting the central United States, placing over 25 million people at risk of damaging storms, large hail, and flash flooding. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), this multi-day event is being driven by a combination of warm temperatures, moisture from the Gulf of Mexico, and a dip in the jet stream. The system is producing severe thunderstorms capable of generating destructive winds, isolated tornadoes, and heavy rainfall. Areas already affected include Colorado, where hail the size of golf balls disrupted travel on Monday, and the Plains, which experienced severe storms on Tuesday. The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) has issued a Slight Risk (level 2/4) for excessive rainfall in parts of west Texas, New Mexico, and the eastern Dakotas. The Storm Prediction Center (SPC) has also highlighted a Slight Risk (level 2/5) for severe thunderstorms in the Northern Plains and Upper Mississippi Valley.
