Philippines Establishes Coast Guard Base on Thitu Island Amid South China Sea Dispute
The Philippines has inaugurated a significant coast guard base on Thitu Island, located in the South China Sea, to assert its sovereignty in a region also claimed by China. The base, described as a 'steadfast sentinel of our sovereignty,' aims to protect the country's maritime interests and support local fishermen. The opening ceremony was attended by Philippine Transport Secretary Giovanni Lopez, Senator Erwin Tulfo, and Coast Guard Commander Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan. This development comes amid ongoing tensions with China, which claims nearly the entire South China Sea despite a 2016 arbitration ruling that invalidated its expansive claims. The new base will be supported by personnel, patrol ships, and aircraft for law enforcement and environmental protection. Smaller outposts are planned for other Philippine-occupied areas.
