Thomas Peterffy, known as the 'father of digital trading,' has amassed a fortune exceeding $80 billion. Despite his wealth, Peterffy has remained relatively unknown in philanthropic circles, primarily due to his limited public charitable activities. He established the Balance for Freedom foundation, which has been largely inactive in terms of grantmaking. However, the Peterffy Foundation, led by his children, has been actively distributing grants, focusing predominantly on environmental causes. The foundation's assets grew significantly after Peterffy donated $78 million in shares, and its grantmaking has averaged $7 million annually since 2021. The foundation supports a wide range of environmental and Indigenous projects across the United States, reflecting a commitment to grassroots and community-based initiatives.
