Federal Court to Decide on Social Media Addiction Lawsuit Against Meta
A significant legal battle is set to unfold in federal court in Oakland, California, where attorneys for the state are challenging Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, over allegations that its social media platforms are designed to be addictive, particularly to children. The lawsuit, which seeks $1.4 trillion in damages, claims that Meta intentionally created features to hook young users and misled the public about the safety of its apps. This case follows previous state court rulings in New Mexico and Los Angeles, where Meta was found liable for damages due to the harmful effects of its products on children. Meta is appealing these decisions and argues that there is no formal recognition of social media addiction in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), which it claims undermines the lawsuit's basis.
