Feeding South Dakota Reports Over 130,000 Residents Face Food Insecurity, Launches Hunger Action Month Initiatives
Feeding South Dakota reports that over 130,000 people in the state are currently facing food insecurity, including one in five children. This significant number means that food insecurity is present in nearly every community across South Dakota. Lori Dykstra, CEO of Feeding South Dakota, attributes this widespread issue to a variety of situational factors, such as seniors on fixed incomes struggling with rising medication costs, and working families, including two-income households, facing setbacks due to medical situations or the increasing costs of food and gas. In response, September has been designated Hunger Action Month, during which Feeding South Dakota is organizing a 'deliver through the decades' volunteer-a-thon at its distribution centers in Pierre (Sept. 15), Rapid City (Sept. 22), and Sioux Falls (Sept. 29) to raise awareness and encourage community involvement.
