EMST Athens Awarded European Art Museum Award for Innovative Social Engagement
The National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens (EMST) has won the European Museum Academy Art Museum Award 2026. The award was presented on September 26 in Alicante, Spain, recognizing EMST's innovative approach to placing art within contemporary social contexts. EMST was selected from a group of six finalists, which included prominent institutions like the Rijksmuseum and FENIX Museum of Migration in the Netherlands. This distinction highlights EMST's transformation and its commitment to engaging with current political, social, and cultural issues through its programming. The museum's artistic director, Katerina Gregos, has been instrumental in developing thematic programs since 2022 that address topics such as nation-building, human relationships in the digital age, gender representation, humanity's relationship with other species, and cosmopolitanism versus nationalism.
