Deep Breathing Technique May Increase Risk-Taking Behavior
A study conducted by researchers from Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin suggests that a breathing technique known as 'prolonged exhalation' may increase risk-taking behavior. The study involved 41 participants who performed a gambling task while undergoing MRI scans. The technique, which involves a short inhale followed by a longer exhale, is known to activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting a 'rest-and-digest' state. However, the research found that this state made participants more sensitive to potential rewards, leading to riskier decisions. The study highlights the role of the body's internal state in shaping decision-making processes.
