Aurora Residents Debate Proposed Tollway Rate Hikes Amid Economic Concerns
Residents of Aurora, Illinois, gathered to discuss the Illinois State Toll Highway Authority's proposed toll rate hikes, the first since 2012. The proposal suggests increasing passenger vehicle tolls by 45 cents for I-Pass users and 30% for commercial vehicles starting January 1, 2027. The rate hikes aim to fund a 15-year, $26.5 billion capital plan for tollway improvements. While some residents expressed concerns about affordability amid rising costs, others, including labor union members, supported the hikes for their potential to create jobs and improve infrastructure. The proposal follows a public transit funding bill that diverts funds from road projects to public transit, with toll hikes intended to offset this shift.
