Researchers Identify Blood Vessel Cells' Role in Cancer Immunotherapy
A recent study has uncovered that a small group of cells lining blood vessels may play a crucial role in aiding the immune system to locate and attack metastatic cancer. This discovery could potentially open new avenues for enhancing immunotherapy. The research focused on cancers that have metastasized to the liver, revealing that specialized blood vessel cells act as guides for T cells, helping them exit the bloodstream and infiltrate tumors. The study identified a subset of endothelial cells that produce lipoprotein lipase (LPL), an enzyme known for fat metabolism, which also aids T cells in recognizing tumor locations. This finding challenges the previous understanding that blood vessel cells within tumors discourage T cell entry. Instead, the presence of these LPL-producing cells correlates with increased T cell infiltration and tumor shrinkage in mouse models.
