Daily Herald Journalists Vote Overwhelmingly to Form Union
Journalists at the Daily Herald in Arlington Heights, IL, have voted 15-0 to form the Daily Herald News Guild. This secret ballot election, conducted via U.S. mail, followed the refusal of newspaper owner Alden Global Capital/Tribune Publishing to voluntarily recognize the union. All 20 union-eligible journalists had previously signed cards in support of organizing in late August. The Guild is expected to be officially certified within a week of the vote tally. This move comes after years of financial challenges at the suburban newspaper, including decades of layoffs and salary reductions. Employees have experienced wage reductions of at least 15% and a reduced work week of 36.5 hours over the last decade. During the same period, there were eight rounds of buyouts and/or combination buyouts and layoffs, culminating in the dismissal of 12 Daily Herald employees on August 12 under the new corporate ownership.
