Northern Lights Could Dazzle Tuesday Amid Strong Storms
A coronal mass ejection from the Sun is expected to reach Earth by midday Tuesday, triggering strong geomagnetic storms and brightening the northern lights. NOAA predicts a Kp index of five, allowing auroras to extend farther south than usual. The lights could be visible across northern U.S. states including Washington, Montana, northern Idaho, northeastern Wyoming, North Dakota, South Dakota, Minnesota, northern Wisconsin, northern Michigan, northern Iowa, northern New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and most of Alaska. Optimal viewing is northward, away from city lights, late at night.
