F-35 Engine Core Upgrade to Undergo Critical Design Review in August
The F-35 fighter jet's engine is set for a significant upgrade, known as the Engine Core Upgrade (ECU), which will face a critical design review in August. This upgrade aims to enhance the F-35's existing F135 engines, manufactured by Pratt & Whitney, by increasing thrust and cooling capabilities. These improvements are necessary to support the F-35's extensive Block 4 upgrades and future enhancements. The critical design review is a crucial step in defense program development, ensuring the design's stability and performance. Following this review, ground testing is scheduled for late 2027, with flight tests anticipated around 2030. The Air Force is also working on an upgraded power and thermal management system to complement the ECU. The Government Accountability Office previously identified risks such as schedule integration issues and part availability, but production is expected to begin in 2031.
