Vitality Group Research Challenges Universal Sleep Guidelines, Advocates for Personalized Approach
New research from Vitality Group challenges the conventional 'one-size-fits-all' advice that everyone needs seven or eight hours of sleep. Analyzing data from over 150,000 members, the study identified a cohort of 'Super Sleepers'—healthy, active adults under 60 who maintain good health despite sleeping less than six hours. Crucially, these individuals consistently exercise at least three times a week and maintain consistent bedtimes and sleep durations. The findings suggest that for this specific group, sleep consistency and regular physical activity can mitigate the negative health outcomes typically associated with shorter sleep durations. Vitality Group emphasizes that a personalized approach, accounting for lifestyle, activity levels, and sleep consistency, can be a more meaningful guide to health than a universal hour-based target.
