Chinese Memory Chip Makers Gain Power Amid AI Boom, Face U.S. Scrutiny
Chinese memory chip manufacturers, ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT) and Yangtze Memory Technologies Corp (YMTC), are gaining significant market power due to the global demand for AI data centers. These companies, known as the 'twin stars' of memory in China, have been able to dictate prices and select clients, sometimes charging more than their South Korean competitors. CXMT recently signed a $7 billion deal with ByteDance, highlighting its growing influence. However, this rise in power has attracted U.S. scrutiny, with the Pentagon designating both firms as Chinese military companies. The U.S. Congress is considering further restrictions on their access to chipmaking equipment, which could impact their operations.
