Fossil Fuels Continue to Dominate Global Electricity Generation Despite Renewable Growth
Despite significant growth in renewable energy sources, fossil fuels still account for 57% of global electricity generation, according to a report by Pew Research Center. Wind and solar energy have expanded rapidly, now supplying 17% of global electricity, up from less than 5% a decade ago. However, the decline in nuclear power and the continued reliance on coal, gas, and oil highlight the challenges in transitioning to a fully renewable energy system. The report notes that while the share of fossil fuels in electricity generation has decreased from 65% in 2000, the absolute use of hydrocarbons has increased due to rising global energy demand.
