Veterinarians Warn of Screwworm Threat to Pets in Texas and New Mexico
Veterinarians and humane societies in Texas and New Mexico are warning pet owners about the threat posed by the New World screwworm fly, which has reappeared in the U.S. after being largely eradicated. The screwworm larvae feed on live flesh, posing a risk to pets, especially those with open wounds. Two cases have been confirmed in dogs, among more than 30 instances in the region. Flea and tick medications are recommended to prevent infestations, as they kill larvae when ingested. Quick veterinary intervention can treat infestations, but untreated cases can be fatal.
