New York City to Launch City-Run Grocery Stores Offering 30% Discounts to Combat Rising Food Prices
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has announced a plan to open five city-owned grocery stores across the city's five boroughs by the end of 2029. These stores will offer a 30 percent discount on essential items such as produce, meat, seafood, milk, bread, and cheese. The initiative aims to address the significant increase in grocery prices, which have risen by approximately 30 percent since the pandemic. The city has allocated $70 million in capital funding to establish these stores, which will be 'grocery-ready' with rent and property taxes covered by the city. The first store is expected to open in the Bronx by the end of 2027. The plan also includes establishing a single public brand for these stores, with the Economic Development Corporation (EDC) playing a key role in the initiative.
