AI Chatbots' Impact on Cognitive Abilities Raises Concerns
Recent studies have raised concerns about the impact of AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT and Google Gemini, on human cognition. Researchers, including Nataliya Kosmyna from MIT, have observed that the increasing reliance on large language models (LLMs) for cognitive tasks may lead to a decline in memory retention and creativity. Kosmyna noted that students and job applicants are using these AI tools to generate content, which may result in a phenomenon known as 'cognitive surrender,' where individuals accept AI-generated information with minimal scrutiny. This reliance on AI could potentially harm cognitive functions and increase the risk of conditions like dementia.
