SEC Office Burglarized During Government Shutdown, Laptops Stolen
An individual has been arrested for burglarizing the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regional office in Fort Worth, Texas, during last year's government shutdown. The incident occurred in the first week of the shutdown, when the SEC had furloughed 88% of its workforce. The alleged thief bypassed security protocols, entering the building and stealing four laptops, a Bluetooth earpiece, and a rolling briefcase. A contracted security officer present at the time failed to stop or identify the intruder, as required by building protocols. The SEC's inspector general reported these security lapses. The suspect is currently held in a Texas corrections center on multiple burglary charges, but the stolen items have not been recovered.
