Trump Allies Use New Jersey Voter Registration Error to Push Anti-Voting Agenda
A software error in New Jersey's Motor Vehicle Commission led to the improper registration of approximately 6,600 noncitizens as voters. Governor Mikie Sherrill announced the error, which occurred between June 2023 and June 2024, and affected fewer than 400 individuals who voted. The Department of Justice has launched a civil rights probe, and Trump allies are using the incident to advocate for the SAVE America Act, which imposes strict voter ID and proof-of-citizenship requirements. The error has sparked political controversy, with Republicans claiming it validates concerns about noncitizen voting, despite the rarity of such occurrences.
