UN Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese Receives Honorary Citizenship from Marzabotto, Italy
Francesca Albanese, the UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, has been granted honorary citizenship by the municipality of Marzabotto, Italy. The ceremony, held at the Municipal Theater, saw Mayor Valentina Cuppi confer the recognition. Marzabotto is historically significant as the site of a Nazi massacre in 1944, and Albanese drew parallels between that historical event and contemporary threats to human rights. In her acceptance speech, Albanese emphasized that rights should not be privileges dependent on the arbitrary decisions of those in power. She highlighted the urgent need to remember Marzabotto's sacrifice as a call to daily, concrete commitment to ensure rights are universal, extending from Palestine to Italy, Sudan, and across Europe. Her remarks underscored the importance of recognizing the equal value of all human lives, regardless of religion, language, political belief, gender, or personal affections.
