21st Century Road to Housing Act Aims to Alleviate Housing Shortage Through Red Tape Reform
The 21st Century Road to Housing Act has been enacted, aiming to address the housing shortage by reducing bureaucratic obstacles in home construction. The law introduces a $200 million 'innovation fund' to incentivize local governments to streamline permitting and zoning processes. This initiative targets the extensive red tape that has been a significant barrier to new home construction, contributing to the high costs associated with building new homes. According to the National Association of Home Builders, regulatory costs account for over a quarter of the average sales price of a new home, which was $499,500 in January. The act seeks to alleviate these costs and expedite the construction process, addressing the acute housing shortage in the U.S. Local governments, like Walton County in Florida, have faced challenges in keeping up with the demand for housing due to cumbersome permitting processes and staff shortages.
