Texas A Experts Highlight Importance of Trace Mineral Testing in Livestock for Health and Production
Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory (TVMDL) experts are emphasizing the critical role of trace mineral levels in livestock health, especially as seasons change. Brandon Dominguez, DVM, veterinary services section head at TVMDL, notes that animals cannot naturally produce these essential minerals and must obtain them through their diet. The quality and availability of nutrients can fluctuate with the season and environment, potentially leading to imbalances. These imbalances, though often overlooked until health issues arise, can significantly impact an animal's bodily functions, reproductive performance, and overall well-being. Dominguez explains that even livestock appearing to be in good condition and growing well might suffer from an unseen mineral deficiency or excess. TVMDL offers testing services for seven key trace minerals—copper, cobalt, iron, manganese, molybdenum, selenium, and zinc—either individually or as a panel, to help producers identify and address these nutritional concern...
