Kadokawa's Reliance on Isekai and Safe Stories Impacts Financial Performance
Kadokawa, a major Japanese publishing and entertainment company, has reported a significant drop in operating profit, down 51.3% year-over-year. The company attributes this decline to its heavy reliance on popular anime and manga genres, particularly isekai and Narou-style stories. These genres, which involve characters being transported to fantasy worlds, have been commercially successful but are now seen as oversaturated. Kadokawa acknowledges that this focus on formula-driven projects has limited content diversity and hindered the exploration of new genres. In response, the company plans to revamp its genre strategy and apply stricter standards for new projects. A Publication Steering Committee has been established to oversee structural reforms in the publishing business.
