Congressional Leaders Introduce Bill to Boost AI in Pediatric Cancer Research
House members Michael McCaul, Ami Bera, and Mike Kelly, co-chairs of the Congressional Childhood Cancer Caucus, have introduced the Accelerating Innovation for Kids with Cancer Act (HR 9632). This bipartisan bill aims to enhance the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in developing treatments for pediatric cancer. If passed, the legislation would mandate the appointment of a federal Coordinator of AI innovation to identify opportunities for AI-driven solutions at the National Institutes of Health’s Cancer Institute’s Childhood Cancer Data Initiative. The bill outlines potential AI applications, such as improving clinical trial design, enhancing data platforms, and consolidating data for AI-ready analysis. It also calls for the establishment of interoperability standards for safe and privacy-compliant data exchanges.
