Missouri Amendment 5 Sparks Concerns Over Potential School Funding Cuts
In Kansas City, Missouri, parents and school districts are expressing concerns over the potential impact of Missouri Amendment 5 on school funding. The amendment, which will be voted on during the August 4 primary election, proposes changes to the state's tax collection system. Parents, particularly those involved with the group Parents for Missouri Public Schools, fear that the amendment could lead to an 18% budget cut for schools, with rural and small-town schools being the most affected. The Independence and Lee's Summit School Districts have formally opposed the amendment, citing the risk to school funding, as Missouri's income tax is a significant revenue source. However, Rep. Bishop Davidson, who sponsored the amendment, argues that it is revenue-neutral and will not impact school budgets. He claims that the amendment will provide budget stability by relying on more predictable sales tax revenues.
