California Court Hears Appeal on Hell's Kitchen Lithium Project's Environmental Review
On July 16, California's Fourth District Court of Appeal heard oral arguments in an appeal by Comite Civico del Valle (CCV) and Earthworks regarding Imperial County's approval of the Hell's Kitchen Lithium Project in the Salton Sea region. The appeal challenges the adequacy of the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) under the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), focusing on issues such as long-term water resources, cumulative environmental impacts, air quality, and tribal cultural resources. CCV and Earthworks argue that the transition to a clean energy economy should include thorough environmental reviews and public participation. The court has not yet issued a decision, and a written opinion is expected after deliberations.
