President Trump's Proposed Arch Faces Overwhelming Public Opposition
President Trump's plan to construct a 250-foot arch in Washington, D.C., featuring a 60-foot-tall gilded Lady Liberty figure, has encountered significant public backlash. The National Capital Planning Commission received over 1,696 public comments, with more than 99% opposing the project. Critics argue that the arch would disrupt the historical and visual integrity of the Memorial Avenue Corridor, which links the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. The U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, appointed by Trump, approved the design, but the project has not received congressional authorization. Public Citizen, a nonprofit organization, has filed a lawsuit to block the construction, citing the need for congressional approval and the potential obstruction of views between key historical sites.
