The permits, which expired on March 31, enabled Waymo to test eight vehicles with safety specialists behind the wheel. Despite no reported collisions, the future of autonomous vehicles in the city remains uncertain. Waymo is hopeful that the state DMV testing permit will be renewed, allowing for further trials. The company has faced criticism from taxi and rideshare operators concerned about economic disruption and the lack of policies regulating autonomous vehicles.
