Study Reveals Complex Factors Behind Longevity in Centenarians
A comprehensive review conducted by a team led by pharmacologist Shaima Ibrahim from the American University in Cairo has analyzed 55 years of research on centenarians to understand the factors contributing to exceptional longevity. The study, published in Discover Public Health, examined 124 studies on individuals aged 100 and above, revealing that longevity is influenced by a combination of genetic, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Key findings indicate that centenarians often follow plant-based diets, engage in regular physical activity, avoid smoking, and maintain strong social connections. The research also highlights the role of genetics, with no single 'longevity gene' identified, but rather a polygenic influence where multiple genetic variants collectively impact lifespan.
