Oystercatchers Make a Comeback Thanks to Conservation Efforts
American oystercatchers, once nearly wiped out in New England, are making a significant comeback due to concerted conservation efforts. Biologists and conservationists have been working to restore their populations along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts. These efforts include educating the public, protecting nesting sites, and implementing measures to reduce threats from predators and human activities. As a result, oystercatcher numbers have increased by 45% from 2008 to 2023. The recovery is part of a broader initiative involving 35 coastal organizations across 16 states, highlighting the success of collaborative conservation strategies.
